UnitedHealth Reports Cyberattack Impacted Approximately 190 Million People

UnitedHealth Group announced that a recent cyberattack has compromised the personal information of approximately 190 million individuals. The healthcare giant revised its previous estimates in light of newly available data. In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), UnitedHealth acknowledged that the breach, which occurred in early December 2024, involved unauthorized access to sensitive customer information, including names, birth dates, and Social Security numbers. UnitedHealth stated that they have engaged cybersecurity experts to investigate the extent of the breach and are implementing measures to safeguard against future incidents. ‘We take the security of our members’ information very seriously and are committed to protecting their data,’ said a spokesperson for UnitedHealth. The breach marks one of the largest in the healthcare sector and has raised concerns about the vulnerabilities within the industry regarding data protection.
