Severe Winter Weather Alert: Snow Expected Across Turkey

A severe weather warning has been issued across nine provinces in Turkey, including Istanbul, as a cold front brings significant snowfall. Local meteorological departments have indicated that the snowfall is expected to begin on Thursday, October 26, 2023. The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s Weather Forecast Department predicts that the precipitation will start as rain but will transition to snowfall as temperatures drop. Notably, the snowfall is expected to be heavier in the higher elevations of the city, accumulating as much as 20 centimeters in some areas.

Delivering the latest updates, İBB Secretary General Can Akın Çağlar commented, “We are monitoring meteorological developments closely and coordinating with relevant departments to ensure public safety and preparedness. The expected low temperatures will contribute to icy conditions and potential travel disruptions.”

In addition to Istanbul, provinces such as Edirne, Tekirdağ, Kırklareli, and others in the Thrace region are also under alert for significant snowfall, with authorities advising residents to avoid unnecessary travel during this period. The Turkish State Meteorological Service has suggested that citizens prepare for a sharp drop in temperatures, with lows expected to reach as low as -1°C in some areas, necessitating precautions against frost and icy roads. Meanwhile, the local governance recommendations include being cautious of road conditions and potential disruptions to public transport.
