In response to dangerously low temperatures, numerous school districts in northeastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania announced closures and delays for Tuesday, February 18, 2025. In Ohio, many districts, including those in Cuyahoga, Summit, and Lorain counties, opted for a cancelation of classes due to the bitter cold that could reach as low as -15 degrees Fahrenheit, with wind chill factors making it feel even colder. Districts such as Cleveland Metropolitan School District, Akron Public Schools, and Lorain City Schools have also reported cancellations. Michael O’Toole, the director of operations at Cleveland Metropolitan Schools, stated, ‘The safety of our students is our top priority, and we simply cannot put them at risk in these extreme conditions.’ Similarly, in Pennsylvania, many districts, including the Pittsburgh Public School District and Allegheny Valley School District, declared delays, allowing parents and guardians to make arrangements for the safety of their children amidst the extreme weather conditions. With schools monitoring weather forecasts closely, it was noted that wind chill factors could lower the temperature to -25 degrees Fahrenheit in some regions, prompting many Jones had said, “We must prioritize the well-being of our students, and these temperatures are just too dangerous for the commute to school.” Parents are encouraged to stay informed through their local channel updates as the day progresses, considering the unpredictable nature of winter weather. In addition, people who need to venture out for any reason are urged to dress in layers and minimize their time outside as weather conditions may deteriorate through the day.
