Duke University Hospital’s Emergency Department (ED) is resuming operations following significant flooding caused by record rainfalls that affected the area. The Emergency Department was submerged under five feet of water, forcing an extensive recovery operation. Duke Health officials stated that full water and power restoration was achieved after over 24 hours of cleanup and hard work. ‘We are grateful for the tireless efforts of our staff and emergency responders,’ said Dr. Michael D. Tarwater, Chief Executive Officer of Duke University Hospital. The flooding resulted in a temporary halt to emergency services, with patients redirected to nearby facilities, including Duke Regional Hospital and UNC Hospitals. Traffic around the hospital was previously impeded due to road closures, but it has since resumed, and the Department is accepting patients again as of today. Hospital officials emphasized that they have taken measures to mitigate future risks, though no injuries were reported from the flood incident.
