Yankees Welcome Back Fan-Favorite Andrew Velazquez on Minor League Contract

The New York Yankees have made a significant move by re-signing Andrew Velazquez, who previously captivated fans during the 2021 Wild Card game. This signing comes on the heels of the Yankees looking to bolster their roster ahead of the upcoming season. Velazquez, known affectionately as ‘Squid,’ earned a cult status among fans, especially after his impressive performance during the postseason. He played a crucial role in the Yankees’ Wild Card matchup against the Boston Red Sox, where he showcased his defensive skills and small ball prowess. After spending last season with the Los Angeles Angels, where he recorded a .227 batting average along with 20 runs batted in (RBIs) and 13 stolen bases, Velazquez’s return is anticipated to add depth to the Yankees’ roster, particularly in the infield. Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman expressed his enthusiasm, stating, ‘Andrew brings not only versatility but a winning attitude that fits our team’s culture.’ Velazquez will commence with the team as a non-roster invitee (NRI) to Spring Training, providing him the opportunity to compete for a spot on the Opening Day roster. His ability to play multiple positions, including shortstop and second base, makes him a valuable asset as the Yankees prepare for the challenges of the upcoming season.
