Two Fishermen Rescued from Ice Floe in Saginaw Bay by U.S. Coast Guard

The U.S. Coast Guard successfully rescued two fishermen who found themselves stranded on a sheet of floating ice approximately one mile from shore in Saginaw Bay on January 22, 2025. The incident occurred around 2:40 p.m., prompting the response of local authorities following a distress call made by the fishermen themselves. First responders noted that the fishermen were unharmed after their ordeal on the ice. Captain David Smith of the U.S. Coast Guard stated, “Quick thinking by the fishermen to call for help was crucial in ensuring their safety.” Rescuers arrived at the scene, assisted the fishermen off the ice, and ensured they returned safely to land. This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by ice conditions on Michigan’s lakes during winter months, with the Coast Guard urging all outdoor enthusiasts to exercise caution and to stay informed about ice safety.
