Tragic Incident at Effingham County Courthouse as Judge Found Dead on Final Day on the Bench

Tragedy struck the Effingham County Courthouse in Georgia on its final day of sessions as Judge Benjamin Yekel was found dead in his courtroom. Authorities confirmed that Judge Yekel, 46, died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The incident unfolded shortly after the court session began, prompting a heavy law enforcement presence at the scene. The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office responded immediately, yet attempts to revive the judge were unsuccessful. Sheriff Jimmy McDuffie expressed his condolences, stating, ‘He was a wonderful father and had a bright legal career ahead of him.’ Yekel transitioned to the bench in 2018 after a decade as an attorney, and he was well-regarded within the community. Effingham County has requested assistance from state authorities to facilitate any ongoing investigations regarding the incident and ensure support for staff and court attendees affected by the tragedy.
