South Carolina Retires No. 22 Jersey in Honor of A’ja Wilson

The University of South Carolina held a significant ceremony to retire the No. 22 jersey of A’ja Wilson, a two-time national player of the year and the face of the Gamecocks’ women’s basketball program. The event took place before the Gamecocks’ game against Auburn on Sunday, honoring Wilson’s monumental contributions to the team and the sport. Wilson, who now plays for the Las Vegas Aces in the WNBA, was emotional during the ceremony as she reflected on her journey. ‘I could talk about it forever, but there’s really not enough time,’ Wilson said, visibly moved. The retired jersey will now hang proudly in Colonial Life Arena alongside other legends, symbolizing the impact Wilson has made on the game and her trailblazing role as a female athlete. This retirement comes after a distinguished college career that included a national championship in 2017 and a historic NCAA tournament run. A’ja Wilson joins an elite group, becoming the second women’s basketball player to have her number retired by the Gamecocks, following in the footsteps of legendary coach Dawn Staley who also had her number honored. The ceremony was filled with excitement, celebrating not only Wilson’s achievements but also the growth of women’s basketball and the legacy that it continues to build at the University of South Carolina.
