Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) recently organized a job fair specifically designed to assist former federal workers who have been negatively impacted by job losses due to the federal government shutdown and other economic hurdles. The event, held on Wednesday, attracted a significant turnout, emphasizing the critical need for employment support in the region as multiple federal agencies continue to grapple with staffing challenges following cuts made during the Trump administration. “There are opportunities out there, and our goal is to connect these individuals with potential employers who are looking for qualified candidates,” said a spokesperson from SIUE. The event is part of a larger initiative led by Governor J.B. Pritzker, who announced plans that include partnerships with companies and organizations focused on hiring former federal employees. Governor Pritzker stated, “We are committed to ensuring that no worker is left behind, especially those who have dedicated their careers to public service.” Additionally, the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) has also ramped up its services to assist these individuals in their job search, providing resources and workshops designed to equip job seekers with tools necessary to navigate the current labor market. IDES spokesperson noted that the agency is seeing a rise in unemployment claims from former federal workers, indicating an urgent need for continued support.
