Ontario’s Doug Ford Criticizes Trump’s Proposed Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has publicly criticized former President Donald Trump’s intention to reintroduce tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum imports. During a press conference, Ford expressed his concern that the tariffs would negatively impact Ontario’s economy and its job market, stating, “We work best when we work together, and putting tariffs on Canadian businesses is not the way to do it.” Ford emphasized that the province relies heavily on manufacturing jobs supported by the steel and aluminum sectors, which significantly contribute to Ontario’s economy. The proposed 25% tariff on steel and 10% on aluminum would come at a time when economies globally are still recovering from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Ford’s government is particularly worried about the implications this would have on cross-border trade, especially considering that Ontario is the largest trading partner with the U.S. Ford urged the Biden administration to avoid such divisive measures and instead work towards building a strong economic partnership. As quoted in a statement, he noted, “We need to support our businesses, not burden them with unnecessary tariffs.”
