National Grid Faces Scrutiny Over Christmas Stroll Power Outage in Nantucket

In Nantucket, Massachusetts, National Grid is under investigation by the state’s Department of Public Utilities (DPU) following the power outage that occurred during the Christmas Stroll event on December 8, 2023. The outage lasted for about two hours and significantly impacted local businesses, which were counting on the event for vital holiday sales. Business owner Scott Schoenfeld of the Brotherhood of Thieves lamented, ‘Without power, we missed our busiest night of the year.’ Executive Director of the Nantucket Chamber of Commerce, Lisa D. Pacheco, emphasized, ‘This outage not only disrupted our festivities but also hit our local economy hard when we can least afford it.’ National Grid acknowledged the outage and stated, ‘Our team responded promptly to restore power, but we are reviewing our procedures to enhance our future response.’ Local officials and residents expressed their disappointment with the utility company’s performance, prompting an urgent call for a review of energy protocols. The DPU indicated that it would closely examine National Grid’s response capabilities, focusing on mitigating the impact of such outages in the future.
