Iconic Mexican Restaurant Chi-Chi’s Set to Make a Comeback After 20 Years

Chi-Chi’s, the beloved Mexican restaurant chain, is making a triumphant return nearly two decades after closing its last U.S. locations. Originally founded in 1975, Chi-Chi’s became known for its vibrant ambiance and menu items like salsa and tortillas, making it a popular dining destination for families. The chain fell into bankruptcy and closed all its locations in 2004 due to a series of financial struggles and legal issues. New owner, McDermott Salsa, LLC, has announced plans to reopen Chi-Chi’s, promising to retain the brand’s original recipes and quality that endeared it to so many patrons. McDermott, a seasoned entrepreneur with ties to the restaurant world through brands like Outback Steakhouse, Kona Grill, and Rojo, stated, ‘There is a nostalgia associated with the Chi-Chi’s brand, and we are excited to bring it back for a new generation to enjoy.’ The company aims to reintroduce the iconic food and ambiance that made Chi-Chi’s a household name. The plan includes opening new locations across the United States, although specific sites and dates have yet to be announced. Chi-Chi’s was once the gem of the casual dining segment but faced challenges including competition and the unfortunate closure of its last restaurant at the Mall of America in 2004. ‘We believe consumers are ready to embrace Chi-Chi’s once again.’ McDermott emphasized while discussing the brand’s legacy and growing demand for Mexican cuisine dining options. The company is undertaking a revitalization strategy that focuses on modernizing the restaurant experience, catering to changing consumer preferences while still honoring the roots of the beloved chain.
