CLEVELAND, OH – Firefighters responded to a significant fire at the Rainforest Exhibit of the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo on January 8, 2025. The emergency call was made shortly after 6:45 PM when flames and thick smoke were observed emanating from the exterior of the structure. Responding units, including six fire companies from the Cleveland Division of Fire, fought the blaze tirelessly for over two hours. Fortunately, the fire was brought under control by 8:24 PM, and no injuries were reported among the staff or visitors. The zoo was closed at the time of the incident, enabling a safe situation during the emergency response. ‘We are thankful that no one was hurt during this incident,’ said Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Director, Dr. Aimee L. W. Sweeney. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but initial reports suggest potential electrical malfunction as the source. Fortunately, no animals were harmed thanks to the swift actions of the zookeepers who ensured the animals were secured prior to firefighting efforts. The Rainforest Exhibit, a key attraction housing exotic animals and plants, is expected to undergo assessments and potentially significant repairs due to the damage caused by the fire. Further updates will be provided as the investigation into the cause progresses.
