CLEVELAND, OH – Crews from the Cleveland Division of Fire responded to a significant fire that erupted on Sunday, January 7, 2025, at the Rainforest exhibit of the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. The blaze began at approximately 4:30 PM and quickly escalated, prompting fire officials to request additional assistance. A total of 25 firefighters were deployed to contain the flames, which were visible from outside the zoo. By around 5:30 PM, firefighters had managed to bring the fire under control.
“When we arrived on the scene, we encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from the building,” said Fire Chief Angelo Calvillo. “Thanks to the rapid response of our personnel, we were able to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby structures.”
No injuries were reported among zoo staff or firefighters; however, there was concern for the animals housed within the exhibit. Early reports indicated that the fire was primarily contained within the building’s exterior, minimizing the impact on the animals. Crews are currently assessing the situation to determine any damage. The Rainforest exhibit, known for its unique tropical species, has been a key attraction at the zoo since its opening.
Zoo officials are collaborating with the Cleveland Division of Fire to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the fire. They stated, “Our top priority is the safety of our animals and staff. We are grateful for the swift response of the fire department.”
The zoo has since remained closed while crews continue to assess both the damage and the care of the rainforest’s inhabitants. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available, ensuring that the community stays informed about the recovery efforts at the zoo.
