Winter Storm Forecast for Maine: Snow, Ice, and Power Outages Expected

Maine is bracing for a powerful winter storm that is projected to hit the region starting Tuesday night and extending into Thursday. The National Weather Service has issued winter storm watches across the state, warning of significant snowfall and ice accumulation. Depending on the location, areas could see anywhere from 6 to 12 inches of snow alongside dangerous ice conditions due to freezing rain.

According to meteorologist Matt Rogers, “The main threats are heavy snow, and significant ice accumulation which could lead to power outages.” The storm is predicted to bring widespread impacts, with forecasts indicating possible wind gusts of up to 50 mph, especially along the coastline. This will increase the risk of blowing and drifting snow, making travel hazardous.

Additionally, temperature fluctuations in the upper 30s during the day could complicate conditions, turning any accumulated ice into a slippery surface. Rogers added, “Travel will be difficult, if not impossible, at times. The timing of this storm could not come at a worse period, coming right before the holiday season.” Local officials are advising residents to prepare for utility disruptions, especially in areas expected to receive substantial ice.
