FTC Issues Refunds to Fortnite Players Totaling $72 Million Over Deceptive Charges

In a significant move, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has initiated the distribution of refunds amounting to $72 million to Fortnite players who were allegedly subjected to deceptive in-game charges. This decision is part of a broader settlement with Epic Games, the company behind Fortnite. The FTC’s actions derived from claims that Epic Games engaged in practices that misled players, including false charges for in-game items and ‘pay-to-win’ tactics which were deemed unfair. FTC Chairwoman Lina Khan emphasized that companies must uphold fair practices and urged consumers who believe they are eligible to check their status and claim their refunds. The refunds are being issued automatically in batches, as Epic Games facilitates this process to ensure all affected players are compensated without needing to submit additional claims. Furthermore, eligible players will see credits reflected in their accounts in the coming weeks. The first wave of payments began on October 17, 2023. Players are advised to keep an eye on their Fortnite accounts for the credits. In addition to the refunds, players may also receive compensation up to $114, depending on the extent to which they were impacted. These funds are part of a larger ethical commitment by Epic Games to rectify its past misleading practices.
