On December 7, 2023, the United States marked the 82nd anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, a pivotal moment in World War II. Survivors gathered at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial to remember the tragedy that took place in 1941. Among the attendees was 100-year-old Edwin O’Brien, who shared his memories of that fateful day. ‘When they attacked, we didn’t know what was happening. There was confusion and chaos,’ he recalled. The day was honored with a moment of silence and the ringing of bells at 7:55 a.m., the exact time of the attack. Nationwide, flags were flown at half-staff in North Carolina as a mark of respect for the heroes who sacrificed their lives during the attack. Governor Roy Cooper ordered the gesture to honor veterans and those who lost their lives. ‘We honor those who fought for our freedom, and their bravery remains an inspiration,’ he stated. Many communities participated in the observance, with ceremonies highlighting the bravery displayed that day and the impact it had on the nation.
