The family of American journalist Austin Tice, who was kidnapped in Syria more than 12 years ago, is taking their case directly to the White House. In a press conference, Tice’s family, including his parents Martin and Debra Tice, called on President Joe Biden to do more to secure the safe return of their son. ‘He’s an American, he’s our son, he’s a father, and we want him home. We want to bring Austin home,’ Debra Tice emphasized, expressing the pain of enduring over a decade of uncertainty. Despite the passing years since his abduction in 2012, hopes remain high that Tice, a distinguished journalist who covered various conflicts, could still be alive. ‘The best way to honor Austin’s legacy is to keep the pressure on, to ensure he is brought home,’ Martin Tice stated. The family plans to meet with White House officials to discuss the ongoing efforts or lack thereof surrounding Tice’s case. The U.S. administration has reportedly engaged in discussions about implementing measures to bring Tice home, but for his family, progress is slow and frustrating. The plea from the Tice family coincides with heightened awareness over the issue of journalists being taken hostage globally. Since Austin’s kidnapping, the U.S. has seen an increasing focus on press freedom and the protection of journalists.
