In a recent advisory, the FBI has alerted smartphone users of potential cybersecurity risks involved in sending text messages between iPhone and Android devices. The agency cautioned that despite the popularity of texting, it may not provide the level of confidentiality many users presume.
The FBI emphasized that Apple’s iMessage and Google’s Android messaging systems utilize different protocols that can make texts susceptible to interception. Cybercriminals could exploit vulnerabilities in the systems, leading to unauthorized access to personal information, conversations, and sensitive data.
“If you’re communicating sensitive information, use end-to-end encrypted messaging services that do not rely on SMS to relay messages,” said Jennifer Lynch, a cybersecurity expert at the FBI.
The warning comes as studies show that many users are unaware of the inherent risks involved in standard texting practices. The FBI urges users to switch to secure messaging applications like Signal or WhatsApp which provide stronger protection through encryption.
