Ashley Benefield, 39, was sentenced on Tuesday to 25 years in prison for the murder of her husband, 43-year-old Tamer Elsayed. The sentencing took place after Benefield was found guilty of second-degree murder in September. During the hearing, it was noted that Benefield shot Elsayed in the back on March 9, 2021, after an argument at their home in Sarasota County, Florida. Circuit Judge Charles Williams stated, ‘You cannot take someone’s life and expect no consequences.’ Benefield’s defense argued that the shooting occurred during a moment of panic and that she was a victim of domestic violence. However, the prosecution countered by calling the act a calculated decision. The court heard about the couple’s tumultuous relationship before the incident, including multiple domestic violence calls and police visits. Benefield has shown remorse during the proceedings, stating, ‘I never intended to take his life.’.
