Housing developments are making strides in various regions of the United States, with significant projects underway in Santa Cruz, Cottage Grove, and Vandalia. In Santa Cruz, the downtown housing development is taking shape as it aims to address the city’s housing crisis. This project includes 59 new units of affordable housing being developed by Danco Builders, expected to finish by mid-2025. City officials believe this initiative will help alleviate the critical shortage of housing in the area. Mayor Fred M. H. Keeley emphasized the importance of these developments in responding to community needs, stating, ‘Affordable housing is a right, and we are committed to making it accessible for all.’
Meanwhile, Cottage Grove is experiencing a housing development boom, with the city approving multiple housing projects to accommodate a growing population. Recent reports highlight the approval of a 288-unit townhome project, led by developer David McNiven of McNiven Development. The city has also seen an influx of new construction companies looking to capitalize on the area’s burgeoning economy. Mayor Mykle W. Ash stressed the significance of this growth, asserting, ‘Cottage Grove is setting the pace for Portland’s suburban expansion.’
In Vandalia, a proposed subdivision on South Brown School Road was recently tabled by the city council. The proposal drew significant community feedback regarding concerns about increased traffic and environmental impacts on the area. City council member, Nancy S. DeWitt, acknowledged the community’s concerns, stating, ‘We need to ensure that any development is sustainable and considers the residents’ needs.’ The city is expected to revisit the proposal after further assessment and community engagement next month.
These developments reflect a national trend towards increasing housing availability, focusing on affordability and sustainability. As cities grapple with housing shortages, the approaches taken in Santa Cruz, Cottage Grove, and Vandalia highlight varying strategies and community involvement in the planning process.
