Houston Area School Districts Close Due to Extreme Winter Weather

In response to severe winter weather conditions, multiple school districts in the Houston area have announced closures for students and staff. On January 21 and 22, 2025, districts including Houston Independent School District (HISD), Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District (CFISD), and Spring Branch Independent School District (SBISD) will remain closed as a safety precaution against the hazardous conditions resulting from snow and icy roads. HISD Superintendent Mike Miles stated, “We must prioritize the safety of our students and staff, which is why we have taken this necessary step.” The National Weather Service reported that parts of the Houston region could see snow accumulations of up to two inches, alongside the temperature dropping to as low as 32 degrees Fahrenheit. As a result of these anticipated weather conditions, many families in the area have begun preparing for the prolonged effects of the winter storm, including potential power outages and transportation disruptions. Additionally, several private schools and daycares have followed suit, issuing announcements about their closure during this period. Metropolitan Transportation Authority has advised residents to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary, and local emergency services are on standby for any incidents that may occur from the inclement weather. The community is advised to keep track of updates from their respective school districts and the National Weather Service for the latest information regarding this winter storm and its impact on local services and safety.
