Baltimore County Superintendent Proposes $1.67 Billion Budget for 2025, Aims for Increased Funding and Enhanced Educational Programs

The Baltimore County Superintendent, Dr. Darryl L. Williams, has put forth a budget proposal of $1.67 billion for the 2025 fiscal year, signaling an increase in funding to enhance educational programs amid rising costs and demands. This budget is $96 million more than the previous year’s budget and aims to address critical needs in the county’s school system, including a 5% salary increase for teachers and additional funding for mental health services, facilities maintenance, and technology upgrades. During a presentation to the Baltimore County Board of Education, Dr. Williams emphasized, ‘This budget reflects our commitment to our students, educators, and families. We must ensure that our staff is compensated fairly while providing our students with the best possible educational opportunities.’ The proposed budget will also include more than $15 million in funding specifically dedicated to mental health supports. The Baltimore County Board of Education plans to hold a virtual public hearing to gather further input on the budget on January 25, 2025. Community members and stakeholders are encouraged to participate and share their ideas. Following the public hearing, the board will finalize the budget which is set to be submitted to the Baltimore County Council for further review. The budget is a pivotal component in addressing the ongoing challenges faced by schools amid a growing emphasis on the mental health of students and educators alike, and representatives from local teacher unions express hope for a collaborative process. The deadline for approval is targeted for March 1, 2025.
