Charges Filed Against 11 Individuals Following Ely Riots in Cardiff

South Wales Police have confirmed that 10 men and one boy have been charged with various offences in connection with the recent riots that occurred in Ely, Cardiff. The disturbances, which took place on Saturday, September 30, 2023, were linked to a violent clash involving rival groups, resulting in police officers being injured and significant property damage. According to the South Wales Police statement, the charged individuals include men aged between 15 and 27, with most of them appearing in court on October 1, 2023. The police have vowed to continue their investigation, emphasizing the importance of addressing the appalling behaviour witnessed during the riots. Chief Superintendent Claire Phillips stated, ‘We are alive to the fact that this is a significant policing event and we will continue to work with our partners to keep people safe.’ The disturbances reportedly included the use of fireworks, and videos shared on social media showed groups engaging in violent confrontations. The police are requesting anyone with additional information or footage of the riots to come forward, as they ramp up the investigation into the events that unfolded over the weekend.
