West Virginia Government and Schools Close Due to Winter Storm

West Virginia faced significant disruptions as a winter storm prompted numerous school closures and local government office shutdowns. The West Virginia Department of Education announced that all public schools in counties affected by the severe weather conditions will remain closed on Tuesday. The counties most impacted included Fayette, Wyoming, and Greenbrier, among others, as heavy snowfall created hazardous conditions across the state. In particular, Greenbrier County reported snowfall amounts nearing 6 inches, leading to concerns about travel safety. Meanwhile, local government offices, including those in the City of Beckley, the city of Charleston, and Kanawha County, also announced closures in response to the extreme weather conditions. Mayor of Charleston, Amy Goodwin, stated, “The health and safety of our citizens is our top priority during this storm. We encourage everyone to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.” The weather forecast indicates that snowfall will continue into Tuesday evening, leading to a potential extension of closures depending on safety assessments. Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest warnings and to prepare for the restoration of services as weather conditions improve.
